Annual Apprentice Competition takes place at Griffin Electric

Holliston, MA (April 2025). Wayne J. Griffin Electric, Inc. (Griffin Electric), a leading electrical subcontractor throughout New England and the Southeast for nearly five decades, recently held its annual Apprentice Competition for the hundreds of students enrolled in its in-house Apprenticeship Training Program. Taking place at the company’s Holliston, MA headquarters and each of its regional office locations in Alabama, Georgia, and North Carolina, apprentices worked in small teams and competed against one another across a series of fun games and activities designed to put fundamental skills and important lessons learned throughout the school year into practice.

Griffin Electric’s debt-free program is an alternative option to traditional schooling, and the company has taken great pride instilling the “Building Blocks of Success” in the many apprentices who have come through the program over the past three decades. Apprenticeship is such a big piece of who Griffin Electric is, and the company is always pleased to be able to bring students and instructors together for this annual event to close out the end of the school year on a high note.

An award ceremony featuring a luncheon at the end of the competition was not only an opportunity for top scoring teams to be recognized for their performance during the day, but it also allowed President Wayne Griffin to speak about just how important apprenticeship and the program is to the company’s success, and just how appreciative he is for the efforts put forth by instructors and students on a daily basis. Raffle prizes were also drawn for the apprentices and teachers in recognition of all their hard work.

Separated into four levels of instruction and offered on-site at the company’s headquarters as well as each of its Southeast office locations in Pelham, AL; Doraville, GA; Raleigh-Durham and Charlotte, NC, Griffin Electric’s Apprenticeship Training Program is fully accredited and designated as an approved training site by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. It features a combination of classroom instruction, hands-on training, and on-the-job learning to deliver a comprehensive educational experience and to help prepare students to earn their licensure and transition into electrician and telecom technician roles.

With opportunities to earn points at each station throughout the day, teams took turns rotating across each activity, which were either hands-on focused, trivia and knowledge based, or a combination of both. From Jeopardy and Concentration to Family Feud and Minute to Win It, apprentices experienced the company’s own unique interpretation of several television game shows as part of the day’s activities. Other stations tested pipe bending and blueprint reading skills, and even puzzle solving at an escape room. The competition also featured a Snap Circuit Challenge, Relay Controls station, and an activity that called on apprentices to safely wire and energize a light.

The success of the Apprentice Competition, and the Apprenticeship Training Program as a whole, is a direct reflection of the many great students, teachers, and people behind the scenes who work tirelessly to make it all possible. The company is proud to have had a direct hand in the growth and development of so many apprentices over the years and looks forward to continuing to support each employee however it can on their career journey.
