Griffin Electric Wiring Expansion of Shelby County Jail

Holliston, MA (March 2025). Wayne J. Griffin Electric, Inc. (Griffin Electric), a leading electrical contractor throughout New England and the Southeast for nearly five decades, is currently performing electrical installations on a 51,000-sf addition to the existing Shelby County Jail in Columbiana, AL. With an anticipated completion in early 2026, the expansion will meet needs for additional space and allow for higher care capabilities for the more than five hundred inmates of the detention facility.

Features of the project include a new segregation unit as well as new units for mental and medical health to better serve inmates. More than 50 new beds and support space will be added across these three units. With the jail being over 20 years old, the project will also address needs to modernize technology and security systems throughout the facility.

Griffin Electric’s Alabama team is tasked with furnishing and installing a complete power distribution system, grounding system, and electrical lighting system for the addition, with construction taking place to ensure the ongoing and uninterrupted use of the facility. The company will also be responsible for installing new systems for fire alarm, surge protection, and lightning protection on-site, as well as the standby generator upgrades to accommodate the new addition, while maintaining the facilities’ emergency systems. Griffin Electric is working with the security contractor to provide all the pathways required for the system upgrades in the new and existing facility.

Clements Dean Building Company of Wilsonville, AL is serving as the project’s general contractor. Goodwyn Mills & Cawood of Montgomery is the architect, while Jackson, Renfro & Associates, Inc., based in Birmingham, is the electrical engineer.
